Walk Hut-to-Hut in the French Alps
Experience the authentic Alps: self-guided hut-to-hut walks with light packs, comfortable refuges, and trails beyond the main tourist paths.
Walk the Alps the way the locals do...
In the French Alps, there are hundreds of stunning walking routes that link a network of staffed mountain huts known as refuges.
These refuges provide meals, comfortable bedding, and a warm welcome each evening , so you can carry a light pack. This means you can enjoy the spectacular scenery, wildlife and culture of the French alps, in comfort and pleasure.
Following the trails locals use, you’ll discover both the iconic peaks and the hidden corners that most visitors miss. All itineraries start and finish in accessible villages with good public transport connections.
Hi, I'm Jenny... I do the planning so you can enjoy the walking
I grew up tramping in New Zealand, lived in the French Alps for several years and have walked the length of the Alps on the GR5, (visiting over 60 mountain refuges along the way).
I use these experience to turn the language, culture, and practical systems of French Alpine walking into clear, achievable self-guided itineraries so you can arrive ready to enjoy the mountains without stress.
I tailor each itinerary to your fitness, experience, and interests, taking care of route planning, daily distances, refuge bookings, language help and travel logistics. You will be provided with personalised maps and a companion guide packed with tips on navigation, scenery, wildlife, and culture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these walks guided?
No. All walks are self-guided, but fully planned for you. You’ll have clear itineraries, maps, and a companion guide so you know exactly where to go and what to expect each day.
Do I need to be very fit?
Not at all. Routes and daily distances are tailored to your fitness and experience. Most of the trails are in good condition and refuges are often no more than a couple of hours apart. This gives lots of options for designing an itinerary that suits you, whether you are a keen day walker or an experienced tramper.
How much do I need to carry?
Very little! Refuges provide meals and bedding, so you only carry what you need for the day and other personal items. I can help organise logistics so you can store other luggage before the start of your trip.
How do I navigate?
Most of the trails are very well marked with signposts and painted markers. I also provide personalised maps (print or app) and a companion guide with notes on the route, scenery, wildlife, and cultural highlights.
Can I have extra support?
Yes — for those who prefer a little guidance, a local expert can be arranged for part or all of your walk.
